THE DIFFERENCE WE’RE MAKING

Even very small things add up when enough people do them.

On this page we’ll be tracking what the entire Tree People community has achieved in real-world terms. You’ll be surprised how the numbers add up.

Be sure to check back soon to see what a difference we’re all making.

In the meantime here are some examples*:

  • If 1,000 Tree People have a shower instead of a bath, once a week for a year, we’d stop about 40 tonnes of carbon from entering the air.
  • If 1,000 Tree People walked to school and back each day (say 3km) instead of taking the car, we’d stop about 3.5 tonnes of carbon from entering the air per week. That’s a lot of carbon.

It’s amazing what one thousand people can do!

*The details:

If you have a shower instead of a bath, the extra electricity required to heat all the water for your bath does not need to be generated. That means that less electricity is required. For every kWh of electricity not produced, 209 grams of carbon dioxide is prevented from going into the air. So if a short shower uses 3.7 kWh less electricity than a bath, that saves 773g CO2. Multiply that by 52 weeks and 1,000 Tree People and you get approximately 40 tonnes of CO2 savings per year.

Genesis Energy has used an independent company to assist in assessing the carbon emission calculation used on this site.

Try guess what will happen at the end of the end of this video: “When Cats Attack!”

Sorry, But we are having a technical difficulty embedding the video on the page!

I thought this video was funny because I thought the cat was going to attack the camera but then…….Meow!!! and it also had dramatic music.

                                         Info:

  • Did you know that the length of a cats whiskers is the width of it’s body!
  • Behavioral problems in cats, such as avoiding the litterbox, excessive meowing and other attention-seeking behavior, biting and painful or destructive scratching can be corrected by first eliminating physical causes, then instituting a program of gradual retraining, with the help of these resources. Remember that there are no bad cats, only uninformed cat caregivers.I would suggest trying to deal with one problem cat behavior at a time. Too many “dos” and “don’ts” will only confuse your cat and frustrate your training attempts. Start with the most potentially hazardous problems first - such as chewing on electrical cords - then move on from there.
    • Attention-Seeking Behavior
Attention-seeking behavior and excessive vocalization often go hand-in-hand with cats. Causes for these behaviors can be either physical or emotional, or both. Before punishing your cat for excessive crying and meowing, or other attention seeking behavior, do some homework on possible causes.

Destructive chewing by cats is undesirable, first, because of the potential of danger to the cat, and second, because of damage to family valuables. • Cats Inappropriate Elimination
Inappropriate elimination with litter box avoidance is the number one reason cats are surrendered to shelters. A large percentage of questions I receive by email or on the About Cats Forum are those concerning cat behavior. The Guilty Suspect is…………………BBR

Comments No Comments »

The Suspects

There are 10 suspects, and only one of them is the guilty party.

Good Luck.

Who do you think did it?

Molly the Manager

Molly is the new manager of the Fun Ho toy museum in Inglewood. She took over the role about a year ago and has proven herself as an excellent manager.
She treats her staff well and has turned the business into a profitable venture.

Molly is a confident young woman who grew up in Oakura and went to business school in New Plymouth. She is an A-grade student who aims one day to start her own successful business designing power suits for business women.

We are not sure if Molly had any idea what was going on at the factory in her toy museum.. but since she was such a good manager.. we imagine she was very aware of the situation.

Ingleburt of Inglewood

Ingleburt is an interesting character who tells us he was named after the town.
His CV shows he has been working around the country as a washing machine & white wear appliance repair man for the last 20 years. He has a degree in Engineering and specialises in metal appliances and technology.
More recently he has returned to Inglewood and started a job at the local Toy Museum recreating old Fun Ho toys in the old factory.

Ingleburt has always had a passion for Fun Ho toys and tells us proudly that he has a personal collection of over 300 sand pit toys.

Things do begin to get very sketchy when you try to research Ingleburt’s childhood. We can’t for instance find any birth certificate for him, or find his name on any Taranaki school roles.

Angelina the Artist

Angelina is the Inglewood artist in residence. She is paid by the council to paint pictures of the Inglewood community and Taranaki region. To supplement this she also works at the local Pukatea Art Studio selling art to tourists.

Angelina seems to be very sharp, mean, rude, and not particularly friendly. To add to this peculiar personality she doesn’t seem to know much about art at all.
When we asked her about her favourite painting styles she replied “with a brush of course.. what are you.. an idiot?”
And when we asked her if she often used the mountain as an icon for the Taranaki area she replied “what mountain? Am I a climber? Do I climb mountains? I am an artist.. so I.. I do art! You need your brain checked”

Spaghetti from the Sports Stadium

Spaghetti is the manager of the local Sports stadium in Inglewood. She tells us that she is very very sporty and certainly dresses the part.. but her general sports knowledge is very limited to say the least.
She tells us she is a “big All Blacks fan because they train on her cycle track for their basketball and netball games.”
She often tries to talk like an aerobics instructor in in-appropriate moments and gets mixed up between sport events easily.
“Tennis is very popular in Inglewood, that’s why we have a pitch all year round with hoops and discus for throwing.”
As well as running the sports stadium Spaghetti has also recently set up a laundry matt specialising in dirty stinky sports sock washing. Unfortunately people have stopped using the business once they discovered they only ever got one clean sock back for every pair they put in to be washed!

Grandma from Grandma’s Bakery

Grandma is your typical kiwi gossip hungry Grandma. She has lived in Inglewood her entire life and knows everything about everyone in the town.
She owns and runs a bakery in town called “Grandma’s Bakery” and makes delicious sweet treats and pies.

She inherited a huge Rhododendron garden 20 years ago and has been winning the “best garden in Taranaki” prize ever since.

It was Grandma’s garden which seemed the worst effected by the stinky sock smelling rhododendrons. She was very upset by the disaster and seems quite confused by whole ordeal.

Shazza the rhododendron lover

Shazza or “Sharon” lives in the Tararua area in a small village called Norsewood, which is close to the town of Dannevirke.

This area was settled by Vikings and apparently this explains why she likes to dress like a Viking??
Others have suggested her outfit is some kind of advertising costume for her business… but we are not sure what kind of “business” she is involved in.

Shazza tells us that she has travelled North to Inglewood to see the beautiful gardens at the Rhododendron Festival.. but she does not seem all that interested in Rhododendrons at all.
Her knowledge of Rhodos, and flowers in general seems to be very lacking for a so called “Rhododendron lover”.

Lindsay the Lizard Lover

Lindsay is one of the more ”unusual” characters who live in Inglewood. He has had an unusual interest in reptiles and lizards since he was a school boy and is now the leading native lizard specialist in New Zealand. If you want to know something about NZ lizards, Lindsay is the man to talk to.

Lindsay grew up in Taranaki and apart from the 4 years he spent in Palmerston North studying reptiles at Massey University, he has lived in Inglewood his whole life.

Lindsay is not really a “people person”. He gets very nervous when he has to speak with other humans, and prefers the company of his many pet lizards to social activity.

Lindsay whakapapa’s back to the iwi of Taranaki and has grown up listening to stories of how the area used to be before it was turned into farmland. The whole Taranaki region was covered in dense forest of native trees and plants… just the perfect habitat for native lizards.

Lindsay has a dream. Over the last five years he has created his own small native lizard sanctuary in Inglewood, but one day he would like to make the whole Taranaki region into a huge super lizard sanctuary. The area could be replanted with native bush, introduced species like rhododendron plants could be removed, and his lizard breeding programme could release hundreds of lizards in the area every year.

Gabriel The Gardener

Gabriel is the local gardener in Inglewood. He works on all of the fancy gardens in the area and is especially busy around the rhododendron festival making sure all of the plants are just perfect.
Gabriel moved to Inglewood about 2 years ago when the local gardener went mysteriously missing. Gabriel filled his position quickly and the locals were pleased to have his help.

Gabriel is not the sharpest trowel in the garden shed. To be frank he is a bit of an idiot. He has been know to grow impressive weeds and cut out 100 year old rhododendrons thinking they were the weeds. He often over trims the trees down to a tiny stump, and has also been known to get the pesticide and the herbicide sprays mixed up.. with devastating effects.

BBQ

BBQ is the head commander of I-SPY, The Studio 2 Super Secret Spy & Surveillance Security Service.
Because she is such a successful super secret spy any personal information about this suspect is top secret and super confidential.
All we can say is that she has bright red hair, and a rather unusual accent.

Recently due to very suspicious evidence I-SPY has suspended BBQ from her duties as head commander, and BBQ herself has become one of the suspects in this case.

BBR

BBR is second in charge at I-SPY. She is a very talented secret agent and also happens to be BBQ’s younger sister.
Because both her and her sister are involved in top secret activities we don’t know a lot about them.

What we do know is that BBR has bright blue hair, and she has her own version of “zats riiight” she says “yes indeeeeeed”.

The Case

Greetings secret agents, I am Q, BBQ.. that’s right..
Here is your case to solve..

On the North Island Westy Coast, with big mountain in zee middle we find Taranaki!

It has surfing highway, plenty of gas, zee beautiful volcano, and zee small town of Inglewood.

Only 20 minutes from the city of New Plymouth this friendly little township is very famous for it’s Fun Ho toy museum and of course having the largest rhododendron tree in the entire southern hemisphere!!

They are my favourite flowers.. But.. something sinister is afoot!
Or more specifically.. afoot with no sock!

Recently Inglewood had big tragedy at zee Taranaki Rhododendron festival!

Peoples came from all over to smell and look at gardens of flowers.. but when they went sniffy at Inglewood flowers they smell stinky old smelly socks!! Ewwww.

The stench was soo bad the judges had to give first prize to big orange cube with plastic flowers!

SO..Why did the Inglewood rhododendrons stink like old socks?

I-SPY intelligence believe there may be link in this case to “the great missing sock mystery!”

Yes agents, for many years all over New Zealands, 1 sock from every pair has mysteriously disappeared!
Perhaps this has happened to you!!
Even I am not immune to this tragedy!
Just a few weeks ago my own personal left sock became MIW, missing in wash!
Interestingly it is always the left socks that disappear!

So could all the missing sockies be causing the stinky flowers in Inglewood?

And if so..

Whooo is stealing the left socks?

Hooow did they make the flowers stinky?

And why did they do it????

  1.  to do well in choir by practising more often.
  2. I’ll try to not get distracted in class by thinking how close I am to finishing and trying to make it seem more fun and ignoring them.
  3. I’ll try to get better at maths by practicing at home and trying my hardest to remember my timetables.
  4. I’ll try to get things finished on time by working faster and not getting distracted and ignoring anyone who distracts me.

So those are my goals for the first half of 2008!
